Internships
Bloomington-Normal is an increasingly diverse community in need of bilingual volunteers. If you are interested in getting involved, contact faculty in the language in which you'd like to use.
The Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures (LAN) also offers a professional practice course (LAN 398).
LAN 398 (Internships and Cooperative Education in Foreign Language)
Interested in turning work/service experience into college credit? Your activity might be eligible if it meets the following criteria:
- Must involve significant use of a language in which the department offers instruction
- Must not take undue advantage of the student, or place student in an unsafe environment
- Student’s insurance must adequately cover activities during the internship
- Prior to the internship, student must obtain the agreement of a faculty member to be responsible for evaluating the student’s activity.
The internship may be conducted either locally or in a foreign country. Some past professional practice internships have included:
- Volunteer humanitarian work in Central America
- Office work at the Caterpillar branch in Tokyo
- Spanish-language broadcasting at a local radio station
- Work with local bilingual children
- Teacher’s aide in Spain
One to 16 hours of credit may be awarded depending on the nature and content of the internship. While no more than four of those may be approved toward a degree, all may be used toward graduation, and such experiences can greatly enhance a resume/CV.
