French Teacher Education Major Requirements
By following the list below, you will complete the course requirements for a major in French Teacher Education.
- FRE 115: Second Year French Part I
- FRE 116: Second Year French Part II
- FRE 213: Written Communication in French
- FRE 215: Advanced French Grammar and Oral Proficiency (a 'B' or better is required in order to take LAN 319/320)
- FRE 224: Contemporary France
- FRE 237: Critical Readings in French
- FRE 305: History of French Civilization
- FRE 300-level electives (300, 314, 325, 326, 327, 328, 335, 340, 341, 385, 386)
- and enough elective credit at the FRE 200/300-level to meet the minimum hours
Recommended electives include:
- FRE 335: Comparative French/English Grammar and Style
- FRE 340: Introduction to Applied French Linguistics
- FRE 314: Studies in Francophone Culture
- FRE 325 Studies in Francophone Literature
- FRE 385 Selected Topics in French Literature
- FRE 386 Selected Topics in French & Francophone Cinema
6 elective or required hours (or more) of French could be earned through a summer or semester study abroad in Quebec, Grenoble, Angers, or another approved French-speaking University. A study abroad may significantly improve your OPI rating.
- LAN 319: Principles in World Language Learning
- LAN 320: World Language Teaching in the K-12 setting
**LAN 319 and LAN 320 must be taken together and you must have
at least Intermiediate High on the OPI to take them (offered fall semesters only). - LAN 321: Integrating Technology into the Foreign Language Classroom (fall only)
- STT 399.12 (student teaching - 12 credit hours) during your final semester at Illinois State. You may not take other courses while you student teach.
The
National Criminal Background Check
must be completed and returned before any student can register for or take any TCH or EAF courses.
Take these during your second semester sophomore year or first semester junior year:
- TCH 210: Child Growth and Development
- TCH 212: Issues in Secondary Education **
**C or better req. in ENG 101 and COM 110
Upon completion of 60 credit hours and anytime after, take:
- EAF 228, 231 OR 235 (228 preferred)
- TCH 216 (lecture and lab): Principles and Practices for Teaching and Learning in Secondary Schools
You should be prepared to dedicate significant time in and outside of class to your TCH 210, 212, 216 and LAN 319/320.
Other requirements
Students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75 and a minimum major GPA of 3.0.
Students must have a grade of “C” or above in all required coursework that is part of their program. This includes all endorsement areas, major courses, and professional education.
Required OPI score of Intermediate High for LAN 319 and LAN 320 and Advanced Low for Student Teaching.
Apply to student teaching (applications accepted in fall semesters only) 1 to 1 and half years prior to your planned student teaching semester.
Gateway 1 (complete during LAN 319/320), and Gateway
2 (complete during student teaching).
